We run a Morse code site, which means we get to see something most people writing about Morse don't: what the public actually types into a search box when Morse code is on their mind. Not what enthusiasts think is interesting — what strangers genuinely want.
We pulled every distinct query that reached this site over nine months. 2,094 of them. The picture that came back was not the one we expected.
Almost nobody wants to learn Morse code
Here's the share of all Morse searches by what the person was actually trying to do:

Over half of all Morse code searches are someone asking a machine to do it for them. Half a percent are people who want to learn.
That ratio — roughly 100 to 1 — is the single most striking thing in the data. Morse code has a thriving amateur radio community with clubs, contests and decades of teaching material, and that entire world accounts for a rounding error in search demand. The public relationship with Morse is not "a skill to acquire". It's "a thing to convert".
The most-looked-up pattern isn't SOS. It's a full stop.
A small but revealing slice of searches are people pasting in a pattern they've seen somewhere and asking what it means. Ranked by volume, here's what they're holding:

SOS — the one piece of Morse everyone claims to know — is 0.5% of pattern lookups. The winner, by a mile, is punctuation. .-.-.- is a period, and it accounts for more than a third of everything people paste in.
That makes sense once you think about where people encounter Morse. Not on the air — on jewelry, tattoos, album art, film props and puzzle games. And engraved designs are full of punctuation and short fragments, not distress calls. The people looking things up aren't operators. They're decoding a gift.
Look closely at the second and third entries and you'll spot the other half of that story: .. .. and . . . . - are both spacing problems. Someone is trying to read marks whose letter gaps didn't survive the design. We wrote about why Morse code jewelry is usually wrong because the data kept pointing at it.
People search for words, and the words are small
Searches for a specific word or name in Morse are a small share of the total, but they're the most human part of the dataset. The most-searched, in order: help, hello, egg, numbers, sos, yes, one, sorry, chris, period, why.
"Help" and "sorry" and "why" sit next to "egg" and a first name. Some of these are homework. Some are a message someone wants to give to a specific person. It's a strange, oddly touching list, and it's a good reminder that most Morse searches are not technical at all.
What this means if you write about Morse code
Three things we'd take from it:
- Lead with the tool, not the history. Half your audience wants a conversion completed, not a story about Samuel Morse. The story is worth telling — but it isn't why they arrived.
- Punctuation is under-served. Every Morse chart shows A–Z prominently and buries the punctuation. The search data says punctuation is what people can't identify.
- Spacing is the real beginner problem. Not memorising letters — reading marks whose gaps have been flattened. Almost nothing written about Morse addresses it.
Method and caveats
This is one site's search data over nine months, from Bing Webmaster Tools, covering 2,094 distinct queries. It's a real sample but not a neutral one: a site called morsecodegenerator.com will naturally over-collect people looking for a generator, and under-collect people searching for ham radio clubs or licence exams. Read the ratios as indicative of general-public interest in Morse, not of the amateur radio community, which mostly doesn't need to search for any of this.
The "possible readings" counts in our jewelry piece were computed by exhaustively splitting each unspaced string into every valid sequence of Morse characters.
