Q-Code Examples: What They Look Like in a Real CW Contact

A reference table tells you QTH means location. It doesn't tell you that QTH? and QTH BOSTON are the same code doing opposite jobs. Here's a full QSO annotated line by line, and the ten Q-codes you'll actually hear.

Q-codes are easy to look up and hard to actually use. A reference table tells you that QTH means location — it doesn't tell you that QTH? and QTH BOSTON are the same code doing two opposite jobs, or that sending QRL? before you call is the difference between a polite operator and one everybody groans at.

The one rule that makes Q-codes click

Every Q-code is both a question and an answer. Add a question mark and it asks; leave it off and it tells.

Get that one distinction and roughly half the confusion disappears. It's also the mistake that most marks out a new operator: sending QRZ when you meant QRZ? tells the band you're calling someone rather than asking who called you.

A real QSO, line by line

Here's an ordinary short contact. Nothing exotic — this is what most CW exchanges actually look like.

Six lines, and only five Q-codes in the whole thing: QRL, QTH, QSL, QRM and QSO. That's typical. Q-codes are seasoning, not the meal — the bulk of a contact is call signs, signal reports and plain CW abbreviations.

The ten you'll actually hear

Two pairs are worth keeping straight because they sound similar and mean different things. QRM is interference a human caused; QRN is noise the sky caused. QRS asks for slower; QRQ asks for faster — and QRP (low power) is not a speed code at all, it's a whole style of operating.

Q-codes, abbreviations and prosigns aren't the same thing

Three different systems get lumped together, and knowing which is which makes a transcript far easier to read:

  • Q-codes — three letters starting with Q, each a question or an answer. QTH, QSL. Full list.
  • Abbreviations — shorthand for ordinary words. TNX (thanks), OM (old man), HW? (how do you copy?), 73 (best regards).
  • Prosigns — run-together letters that punctuate rather than spell. AR (end of message), BT (paragraph break, written =), SK (end of contact).

In the QSO above, QSL is a Q-code, TNX and 73 are abbreviations, and = and SK are prosigns. All three in one line is completely normal.

Three mistakes worth avoiding

  1. Calling without sending QRL? first. The station you can't hear can usually hear you.
  2. Using the question form when you mean the answer. QSL? asks; QSL confirms.
  3. Over-seasoning. Stacking six Q-codes into one line reads as showing off and is harder to copy. Real operators use a handful.

Practice them before you transmit

The fastest way to get comfortable is to hear these at speed rather than read them. Drop any of the exchanges above into the translator to hear the rhythm, or generate endless realistic exchanges — call signs, reports, Q-codes and all — with the random CW generator. When you can copy a full QSO without pausing, you're ready for the real thing; calling CQ walks through your first contact end to end.
