Morse code jewelry has one job: to say something. Most of it doesn't. Not because the dots and dashes are wrong — usually they're taken straight from a correct chart — but because the gaps get lost somewhere between the design and the metal. And in Morse, the gaps carry as much meaning as the marks.
This is worth understanding before you buy a piece, commission an engraver, or sit down for a tattoo. Once it's on metal or skin, it's not a typo you can fix.
Morse has three gaps, and jewelry usually keeps none of them
International Morse is built on a strict timing ratio. A dot is one unit. A dash is three. And the spaces are not decoration — they're part of the code:
- 1 unit — between the dots and dashes inside one letter
- 3 units — between one letter and the next
- 7 units — between words
A jeweller laying out beads or an engraver spacing marks will almost always space everything evenly, because evenly spaced looks better. That single aesthetic decision destroys the letter boundaries — and without letter boundaries, the string stops being decodable.
What "LOVE" becomes without gaps
Written properly, LOVE is .-.. --- ...- . — four letters, clearly separated.
Run the same marks together with even spacing and you get .-..---...-.. That string is still valid Morse. The problem is that it's valid in 612 different ways. A decoder — human or software — has no way to know which one you meant. ENAGER is as legitimate a reading as LOVE.
It isn't just long words. We counted every valid way to split each string into real Morse characters:

Even HI — two letters, six dots — has 31 readings once the gap between H and I disappears. Five of those dots in a row is the digit 5, so ...... reads just as happily as "5E" or "EEEEEE".
The one exception: SOS
You'll notice SOS in that table with 220 readings, which seems to contradict the fact that SOS is genuinely written closed up as ...---.... Both are true. SOS is a prosign — it's deliberately sent as one unbroken string with no letter gaps, and it's recognised by convention rather than by parsing. That's exactly what makes it a distress signal instead of the three letters S, O and S. It's the exception that proves the rule: it only works because everyone already agrees what it means.
How to get a design right
The fix is not complicated. It's just usually skipped.
- Make the letter gap visibly bigger than the symbol gap. If your dots inside a letter sit 1mm apart, letters should sit at least 3mm apart, and words 7mm. Proportion matters more than exact size.
- Use two clearly different mark shapes. A dash should read as three times a dot, not slightly longer. Round bead for a dot, long bar for a dash is the clearest convention.
- Don't let a clasp or a curve eat a gap. On a bracelet, the join is where letters most often get swallowed. Design the layout flat first, then check where it wraps.
- Decode it back before you commit. This is the step that catches everything.
Check a design before it's permanent
Paste the pattern into the Morse code decoder exactly as it will appear on the piece — including the spacing. If it comes back as your word, the spacing works. If it comes back as something else, or the decoder offers you a different reading, the design is ambiguous and a jeweller will not catch it for you.
Two things worth trying while you're there: paste it with the gaps and then without, and compare. The difference is usually startling, and it's the fastest way to see whether your layout is carrying the letter boundaries.

A quick checklist
- Are letter gaps about three times the gaps inside a letter?
- Are word gaps about seven times?
- Are dashes clearly three times the length of dots?
- Does the decoder return your exact word from the spacing as drawn?
- If it wraps or curves, do the gaps survive the bend?
Get those five right and the piece says what you meant it to say — to anyone who can read Morse, not just to the person who commissioned it. Get them wrong and you have attractive jewelry that technically reads ENAGER.
